Höhenprofil
The Lechweg stands for moderate long-distance hiking through an alpine region. It begins at an altitude of 1,793 meters near Lake Formarin and ends at an altitude of around 800 meters in Füssen in the Allgäu. The Lechweg therefore leads from the high mountains to the Alpine foothills. The majority of the trail has a gentle gradient. Nevertheless, there are also some steeper sections to tackle. Depending on your fitness level and individual travel planning, three different stage divisions are therefore possible. Of course, additional overnight stays can be booked in each stage location.
Long-distance hiking through an Alpine region that is also one of the last wild river landscapes in Europe: the Lechweg offers a unique experience of nature, people shaped by the landscape and truly legendary stories. For around 125 kilometers, hikers accompany the Lech from its source near Lake Formarin in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg to the Lech Falls in Füssen in the Allgäu region. The Lechweg leads past one of the largest ibex colonies in Europe, past a waterfall that magically dries up and springs anew every year, over the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Austria to the Bavarian royal castles. The trail connects three regions and two countries with their traditions and stories. From the Arlberg region via the Tyrolean nature park regions of Lechtal and Reutte to the southern Allgäu:
The Lech river has shaped all three regions over the centuries. From the Romans and their Alpine crossings, to the Swabian children and the raftsmen – the Lech has played an important role in every story. The magical turquoise river also shapes the flora and fauna. Many breeding bird species and wild orchids form one of the most species-rich habitats in Central Europe. The Tiroler Lech Nature Park was established to preserve one of the last wild river landscapes in Europe. The European Hiking Association has subjected the transnational Lech Trail to a strict quality inspection and certified it as the first Leading Quality Trail. The Lechweg is therefore a model for long-distance hiking trails throughout Europe.Moderate hiking on the Lechweg is best done without heavy loads on your shoulders.
