Furkajoch (1760 m) – Portlajoch (1813 m) – Stechweid trail – Gäviser Höhe – Matonagrat ridge – Freschenhaus (1846 m) – Hoher Freschen (2004 m). Return on the same route.“Matonagrat“ – sounds like forbidding high-alpine terrain and abysses left and right. As a matter of fact, the ascent is a good deal easier than it sounds. The 2000m high peak offers 360-degree panoramic views into the Rhine valley, as far as Switzerland and Lake Constance, right to the Silvretta massif, and – 180 further – across the undulating hills of the Bregenzerwald and the Allgäu. What a feat in such close vicinity to Vorarlberg’s conurbations! At your feet: the ridges and white-water gorges of the Vorarlberg Helveticum zone, hard lime rocks and vertical drops create a primordial landscape. To the left and right, the Rhine valley summits: Hohe Kugel, Schöner Mann, Strahlkopf, Staufen, Bocksberg, First, much-haunted by local mountaineers.
