How to Reach Vorarlberg

Getting there: Vorarlberg stretches some 100 km from north to south and is within easy reach.

Getting there: Vorarlberg is within easy reach on all routes and all means of transport. The system of public transport is extremely well developed. Train and bus services are closely dovetailed in the Vorarlberg Transport Network. In some regions, hiking buses operate in addition to scheduled services. Visitors in the Kleinwalsertal may use the Walserbus free of charge.

    • From Austria: Very good intercity connections from eastern and southern Austria, also motorail and night trains: www.oebb.at
    • From Germany: Via Lindau – Bregenz. Destination station for trips to Kleinwalsertal is Oberstdorf/Allgäu (D). German railway: www.bahn.de
      Daily direct Railjet connection from Frankfurt Hbf (via Darmstadt, Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Ulm) to Vorarlberg (Bregenz – Dornbirn – Feldkirch – Bludenz – Langen a.A.). Daily ICE connection from Dortmund, Köln, Mannheim, Heidelberg, Ulm to Vorarlberg and several EC-connections from Munich.
      From Hamburg-Altona: Nightjet to Zurich or Innsbruck and with 1 change to the EC/Railjet connections to Bregenz (from Zurich) or Bludenz/Feldkirch (from Innsbruck): www.nightjet.com
    • From Switzerland and France:

    via Singen – Friedrichshafen – Lindau or Singen – Konstanz/Kreuzlingen – St. Gallen, via Ulm – Memmingen – Lindau.
    Via Augsburg or Munich – Memmingen – Lindau or via Nürnberg – Ulm – Lindau.
    From the west
    via Zürich – St. Gallen or Zurich – Walensee – Sargans.
    From the south
    via Como (I/CH) – San Bernardino – Chur; Brenner motorway (I/A) – Innsbruck or Reschen pass (I/A) – Landeck.
    From the east
    via Innsbruck – Arlberg road tunnel or Arlberg pass road or via Reutte – Lechtal – Bregenzerwald (Note: the L 198 Lechtal road from Warth nach Lech is usually closed in winter).

    The Kleinwalsertal can be reached on the A7 via Memmingen – Kempten – Immenstadt or Füssen – Immenstadt or Lindau – Immenstadt (B308), then continue via Sonthofen and Oberstdorf.

    Arlberg Road Tunnel

    The Arlberg road tunnel is completely closed from 15 April to 22 November 2024 due to extensive renovations. The Arlberg Pass will be the regional alternative route from the beginning of the full closure. At the weekend, there may then be delays on the pass route due to traffic congestion. Alternative routes are the Arlbergpass road B 197, the Fernpass B 179, the route Rosenheim-Munich (D), via Gotthard and San Bernardino (CH)).

    Exemptions from the toll sticker obligation in Vorarlberg
    The A 14 Rheintal/Walgau motorway toll route between the state border at Hörbranz and the Hohenems junction is (temporarily) toll-free (as of 2022). You can find other exempted routes in Austria here:
