Snow Shoe Rambling

While winter hikers usually stick to cleared or groomed trails, snow shoe hikers move in open terrain and ramble on special boots across deep powder. In the interest of safety, it is advisable to always set out in the company of a guide who is familiar with the local terrain.

Guided winter hikes are organised at many resorts.

• Snow Shoe Ramble in Lech Zürs: If you are keen to explore the fantastic landscape around Lech Zürs on snow shoes, you can rent the gear on site. Guided tours to the most scenic locations are organised regularly, including torch-lit evening hikes
• Diedamskopf Snow Shoe Rambling: The snow sports school Au-Schoppernau organises snow shoe rambles with a toboggan ride down to the valley to end the tour on Thursdays (alternatively on Fridays). Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the valley terminal of Diedamskopf-Bahn. The price is EUR 70 per person and includes the cable-car ticket, rental snow shoes and toboggan.
• Snow Shoe Ramble at Full Moon in the Lecknertal: Snow shoe rambling through the Lecknertal valley in nocturnal silence during full-moon nights expertly guided by Helga Rädler. The hike starts at 8:00 p.m. at the village fountain of Hittisau and lasts 1.5 hours. Price per person including snow shoe and pole rental EUR 20.

• Beginners’ Tour in the Kleinwalsertal: On Tuesdays (December to April) interested beginners can try out a snow shoe tour in Kleinwalsertal. Two-hour programme.
• Gottesacker Tour in Kleinwalsertal: On Thursdays (December to April) a snow shoe tour takes ramblers across the snow dunes at Gottesacker. The route runs through high-Alpine terrain and requires a good level of fitness. Walking time approx. 4 hours.
• Snow Shoe Ramble in the Kleinwalsertal Gourmet Region: On Thursdays (December to April) pleasure hikers go on a laid-back snow shoe ramble and will find out about Kleinwalsertal specialities such as game and beef. Along the way, Herbert Edlinger will share some information about regional farming and hunting. At the end of the tour, snack will be served.
• Snow Shoe Ramble in Sonntag-Stein Hikers take the cable car in Sonntag to the point of departure at 1,750m altitude. The leisurely ramble through the alp area takes roughly 2.5 hours. The tours are organised on Sundays, accompanied by the winter hiking guides of BERGaktiv Grosses Walsertal.
• Biosphere Park Grosses Walsertal Inner Core: In the core zone of the Grosses Walsertal biosphere park, nature can fully develop without human interference. On Wednesdays, an informative and enchanting snow shoe tour takes hikers to this world of mystery.
• Scenic Views from Muttjöchle: Muttjöchle (2,074 m) in Klostertal provides especially stunning views. Guided 2.5-hour snow shoe tours are organised from Sonnenkopf on Wednesdays.
• Snow Shoe Taster in Brandnertal: If you are novel to show shoe rambling, the taster tour accompanied by the guides of BergAKTIV Brandnertal is a perfect choice. A two-hour tour through snow-covered mountain scenery is organised in Brand and Bürserberg on Mondays. Participation is free for holders of a Brandnertal guest card.

• Nocturnal Snow Shoe Ramble in Montafon: In Gargellen, hiking guide Günther Ebenhoch takes participants on a night-time stroll. The 2-hour tours are organised Mondays from 8:00 p.m. by the local ski school.
• Snowshoe hiking to the Silvrettasee
  Surrounded by the majestic 3000ers of the Silvretta mountain range, this guided snowshoe hike leads to the southernmost point in Vorarlberg through a beautiful winter backdrop. The day begins early in the morning in Partenen with the impressive Vermuntbahn ascent. The tunnel buses are already waiting at the summit station to take winter athletes through the Vermunt tunnels toward Silvretta-Bielerhöhe. Arriving at 2,037 metres, the frozen Silvrettasee is at your feet – pure winter pleasure!
• Snow Shoe Ramble with Mine Visit in Montafon: Sunny Bartholomäberg was once a mining centre. The snow shoe ramble organised on Thursdays from 20 December to 18 April ends with a guided tour of the St Anna tunnel, which is accessible for a length of 115m.
• Snow shoe hike to the smuggler’s village Gargellen
  Crystal-clear mountain air, perfect silence apart from the sound of fresh snow crunching under “bear paws”, and above all breathtaking panoramic views of the Gargellen mountains: At the foot of Madrisa, the smugglers’ mountain, this snowshoe hike leads along the idyllic Valzifenzbach stream. Pure winter pleasure!
