Heimatmuseum Alberschwende und landwirtschaftliche Sammlung “Mesmers Stall”
-
The Cultural Heritage Museum in the town of Alberschwende has two separate locations. The displays in the community health center portray rural lifestyles and farming life in the 18th and 19th centuries. One exhibit, “From Flax to Linen”, focuses on traditional local textile production. Opened in 2005 after extensive renovations, a second branch of the museum, called “Messmer’s Stall”, is located in the former shed of the sexton’s premises, near the church. It has been in use since autumn 2018 for the exhibit “From A to B”, which offers a cultural-historical overview of the town of Alberschwende, with special emphasis on the transportation sector and its pioneers.
The Cultural Heritage Museum was the brainchild of the community veterinarian, Ulrich Mittelberger, who amassed a collection of everything dealing with village and rural life. One of his main goals was to preserve this cultural heritage from being lost, destroyed or sold off. Thanks to the support of Herbert Metzler (architect) and Erich Winder the museum was first opened in 1977. In 2000 it was redesigned and reorganized under the direction of Herbert Klas. The current exhibition in “Mesmer’s Stall” was initiated by the association Kulturmeile.
