Circular lagoon hike in the Rhine river delta - Lake Constance
Visiting a natural paradise
Hike right into Lake Constance?
Yes, you can! Right into the estuary landscape of the Rhine river in Fußach at Lake Constance. The easy lagoon hike is particular recommended in spring, when numerous bird species come back to Vorarlberg to breed in the Rhine river delta, while many winter birds migrate back to the north.
The Rhine river delta and Lake Constance are among the most important winter sanctuaries for thousands of bird species. The favourable climatic conditions and the nutrient-rich shallow water areas attract many bird species to spend winter and spring here. With a little luck, you can spot rare bird and butterfly species here. The Rhine river delta is Vorarlberg’s oldest nature conservation area, which has been protected since 1947. It was even added to the list of European Protection Areas (Natura 2000) a few years ago.
From the car park, we recommend walking the first section on the causeway, where rare orchids and other species blossom here from the end of April. Numerous butterflies and wild bees fly through the biodiverse rough pasture meadows and sand lizards warm themselves in the sun. Along the route through the alluvial forest, you can even see signs of beavers gnawing in places. Beavers returned to the Rhine river delta a few years ago, and feel at home again in this natural paradise. You can watch the rare common terns in the lagoon. A few nesting rafts were built as artificial islands, to protect their nests from natural enemies like foxes, martens and rats.
