Peterhof, Furx
Alpine space of opportunity
TEXT: Renate Breuß and Marina Hämmerle
It takes courage and foresight to plan from scratch and then realise the layout of your own family business at an altitude of 1,200 metres and in an age of winters that are increasingly free of snow. Such an undertaking can only succeed if the decision to do so is taken together and the concept is supported by the generation that is to follow. That’s what happened at the Peterhof in Furx. Patrick and Sarah, the grandchildren who are now running the business, are continuing entirely in line with the pioneering spirit of their grandmother Geli – they continue to bank on the tranquillity and power of the location, nature and the landscape.
As far as the concept is concerned, the construction of ten chalets that are carefully being composed into the slope is breaking new ground. Their language of design is based on the contemporary Vorarlberg art of timber construction – compact, straightforward and perfectly detailed – the top-notch craftsmanship and high-quality materials guarantee a pleasant and soothing atmosphere on the inside while the outdoor seating area offers comfort and presents a mountain panorama that seeks its equal. Guests looking for a bit of peace and quiet will enjoy the room service with an individually stocked breakfast box or dinner for two. While they’ll also appreciate the anti-throwaway philosophy.
Culinary pleasures are drawn from the new alpine inn’s kitchen. The architects at Baumschlager Eberle dug deep into their box of tools to deliver a structure in space that is both familiar and yet exotic. Finger-shaped, easily playable rooms reach into the landscape to present wide-ranging views and intimacy at the same time. The acoustically effective ceiling construction has been artfully folded and protected by a mighty copper roof while the restaurant lights up like a discreet lantern in the evenings.
Such local fresh produce as venison sourced from the venue’s own fallow deer that live on the Alpe Furx alpine meadow or from the hunting grounds in the valley that is the Laternsertal is served, expertly and lovingly prepared by head chef Arno Vith, who is actively supported by his uncle and senior chef Karl-Heinz Schmid. The menu includes such traditional dishes as a good liver-dumpling soup, a classic Wienerschnitzel and the delicate processing of dairy products sourced from the farmer next door as well as a vegetarian lentil curry or mushroom risotto. Dishes that are enjoyed by both regulars and guests who visit from afar. The Peterhof is also ideal for larger family celebrations – not only because of the inn’s airy layout and the family-friendly chalets but also because of the host family. Visitors are in the best of hands with the Schmids because they are fully aware of what’s important. The Peterhof in Furx is autochthonous in every respect.
