With the Oberlech cable car or with the local bus we get comfortably to Oberlech and start from here the tour to the Skyspace-Lech and further to the Kriegeralpe.

With the Oberlech mountain cable car we go up to the Burgplateau, from here we hike to the bus stop at the Hotel Mohnenfluh in Oberlech. This is also where the Lech-Kriegeralp trail begins. Passing the Muxelhof and Schottenhof we reach the Skyspace-Lech. This work of art, designed by James Turrell and opened in 2018, grants entirely new dimensions through its special architecture – the open dome narrows the space and the field of vision of the sky in such a way that a completely new sense of space, time and thus consciousness is created. We linger here for a while and enjoy this spectacular work of art in the midst of the mountains of Lech Zürs with a view in the direction of Biberkopf. Then we continue leisurely uphill past the Grubenalpe. In the later course we can still visit the gypsum holes, before it goes past the Petersboden mountain station and the ski hut “Der Wolf” further up to the Kriegeralpe. From there you can admire the, from the Horizon Field installation of the artist Antony Gormley sculpture No.3 vis à vis the Kriegeralpe.

The Skyspace-Lech and the gypsum holes near the hiking trail are always worth a detour. The Skyspace-Lech is an almost entirely underground structure that blends sensitively into the landscape at "Tannegg". The oval main room has an equally oval opening in the ceiling and a surrounding bench, which, like the floor, is lined with black granite. At dusk - just before sunrise and sunset - the walls and ceiling in the Skyspace-Lech are bathed in color-changing light. The sky is perceived as part of the room through the opening. Equipped with a movable dome, the Skyspace-Lech offers the unique opportunity to play on the Skyspace with another of James Turrell's artistic concepts, which visualizes a full-field effect in the dome area. The walls and ceiling are bathed in color-changing light, so that what was previously perceived as a clear spatial structure seems to dissolve.
